Chapter Eight, Part One

Adalia went through the rest of the week in a daze. Lessons flew through one ear and out the other, meals past in a blur, she vaguely remembered listening to Faryn wax poetic about Jamsie. Something about soft words and laughing and Professor Weasley’s old as dirt cat getting tortured.

She couldn’t look either of her Slytherin boys in the eye. They tried to make her believe they were joking, that it was something said in anger to make her feel bad, to try and get the life back into her eyes.

It didn’t work.

For once in her life, Add was getting near as good of grades as her older sister. She went to class, took notes robotically, did her assignments. Though the boys could sneak into the Ravenclaw common room and see her, she spent most of her time, when not in class, in her dorm room – yes, she was hiding.

Chapter Seven, Part Three

This was one of the rare times that Ava would admit to being afraid. She rested a hand on the smooth stomach, hiding her baby. All of the worries that her friends and family had heaped upon her returned to her mind, especially Adalia’s. Like a lamb being led to the slaughter with a convenient side dish.

A door opened to her left, letting some dim light into the dark room they had told her to wait in. Luna’s husband, Rolf, had an old friend who was a Death Eater of the New Order, who didn’t know that the Lovegood-Scamander family was working for the Order of the Phoenix. Somehow he was initiating her. She was foggy on the exact details, but they didn’t matter- she was just doing her job.

The man at the door beckoned her to enter the other room, so Ava pushed her doubts and worries out of her head, holding herself confidently. “Okay Rigel, with mama luck,” she whispered to her baby, entering the room.

Chapter Seven, Part Two

Addy helped the boys shove their trunks onto the racks, silently thanking her parents for shrinking her own down to its comfortable place inside her pockets. “What shall we do this year, then?” she asked, grinning.

It was an ongoing tradition that the three, now dubbed the new Fred and George Weasley (much to Headmistress McGonagall’s dismay) would mess with the First Years upon their arrival. It was also why they chose compartments closer to the front of the train, where the newbies tended to group together.

“Trolls? Dragons? Fluffy? Fluffy always works well, since we’ve actually still got the old boy around should we get any ballsy little ones,” Scor pondered aloud, “though we have done that before, and word does spread first among the ickle ones. They might already know to steer clear of us.”

“Or the ones that’ve gone through it already might keep it as a rite of passage,” Al shrugged, hugging  her waist. “Whatcha think, Adds?”

Thinking about it a moment, she simply said “Unicorns,” whilst staring out the compartment window at the passing countryside.

Chapter Seven, Part One

Everything appeared to be normal.

But Ava was gone. She’d left for her mission without saying goodbye, leaving a gaping hole in at least three lives. Faryn, though, could understand why her cousin did it- so as not to make it harder for her or Addy, as well as for Ava herself. Life was quiet for the short week leading up to the beginning of the school year. The week flew by, even with a lack of activity.

On the morning of September 1st, Faryn awoke to Adalia banging on her door. “Faryn! Come on, we’ll be late!” The girl shouted. Faryn tumbled out of bed and into the bathroom she and her sister shared. “Did you stay up late talking to Jamesy?” Adalia questioned as she brushed her hair.

“Sh’up,” Her sister replied with a toothbrush in her mouth. Both girls had had their trunks packed for days, and Adalia wasn’t planning on putting Sophie in a cage, as if the feline would have gone into one willingly anyway.

Chapter Six, Part Three

Ava and Teddy had gone to bed together. They were, for the longest time, nothing more than a tumble of arms, legs, mouths, hands, tongues, and tears.

Ava hated to cry, but  it came naturally the moment she was back in his arms. Teddy was crying too; Teddy who was the kindest person she knew, but also the most solid, the most adamant figure in her life. She might lose everyone, the Order of the Phoenix could come and go, Voldemort himself could rise and fall again…but if she had Teddy she could survive. He was her rock.

Chapter Six, Part Two

Adalia felt good. Warm. Safe.

Things were right in the world, at least for now. Her safety bubble, the people she loved the most…it was all okay. She was still kinda miffed about everything, but it wasn’t as monumental now. Faryn wasn’t crying, which was always a good thing in the young Ravenclaw’s book. No one was upset.

Well, not entirely true, but whatever. Close enough.

Besides all that, though, she felt a lot better. Curled up in an armchair in her room, in front of the fireplace, reading a book and petting her cat. Sophie purred, intertwining herself among Addy’s arms and her book.

Of course, again, it was Ms. Granger-Weasley’s.

Chapter Six, Part One

Faryn almost didn’t hear Adalia knocking on her door. The Hufflepuff had fallen into a fitful sleep, clutching her DA coin. James had assured her that she would be fine, that losing her sister’s trust was not the end of the world. It was, though, to Faryn. Addy was her other half, so to speak. It really was like they were almost twins, not even noticing the age different sometimes. Even if they did get on each other’s nerves sometimes, they were each other’s best friends.

But Faryn really thought she had blown it when she let Ava’s  secret slip to her friends. Ava wasn’t mad at her, just Adalia, for being hypocritical. So she was astonished to hear a knock at her door. She dared to hope that it was Adalia, but it could very well be Ava, or one of their parents. She looked up, unable to move. The door swung open and Faryn’d heart almost burst at seeing her sister. Adalia gave her a small smile. Faryn, in one swift, emotion driven move, stumbled off of her bed and into a standing position, and Adalia raced into her sister’s arms. The two of them hugged fiercely, as though they had thought they might never see each other again, or they had been parted for a long amount of time. Faryn started crying, her reserve broken again. Even without hearing it from her sister she knew that Adalia had forgiven her.

Chapter Five, Part Three

Ava laid a hand on her bulging stomach and took a sip of her tea. It was uncharacteristic for her not to be drinking Fire Whiskey, but her aunt and uncle didn’t seem to have any. And she just wanted to relax. She rested against the chair and closed her eyes. All the anger and resentment had gone out of her. She wasn’t bitter anymore, but she sensed that things were less than okay between Adalia and Faryn. She knew that they could -and eventually would- work things out on their own. But now she had her own problems. She thought back to one of her previous conversations with Harry- she would be starting her job as a spy for the Order of the Phoenix once the weekend was over. The reality hit her that she only had two days left- two days with her cousins, two days with her family, two days left with Teddy.

Ava let a solitary tear fall into her teacup. It suddenly felt all too real- the baby, the mission, her cousins’ angst, the danger she was getting into, how much she missed Teddy.

Chapter Five, Part Two

Addy didn’t really know why she sided with Ava through the whole debacle with Faryn. She was mad at both of them, feeling more and more isolated from them with every passing day. “Who are they? I don’t even know anymore…” she sighed, settling back on her bed.

“They’re your sister and cousin, doofus,” came a voice from beside her.

“Godric! Al, could you scare me any more? Honestly.”

He grinned impishly. “Sorry. But I heard James talking to Ryn through the DA coins, and I figured if she was in that bad of a state that you were feeling a bit in the dumps as well. So I let myself in.” Holding up the cookies in his hand, his grin stretched. “Your mum gave me these.”
